33 York Street

The King Family

1881 – 1901

Head of household is John King.  In 1881 he  is a labourer for the Great Eastern Railway.  He was born in Arlesey, Bedfordshire and is 30 years old.  His wife is Emma (nee Green), 36, from Camberwell in Surrey.  They have two children Mary H (6) , John Henry (4), both children are Cambridge-born and attend school.

The couple have a three year old boarder, Millie Hunt, and a 29 year old lodger, Isaac Badcock from Haslingfield.  Isaac is 29 and works as a shunter (pointsman) on the Great Eastern Railway.

Emma died in 1883.  She was buried on 19 May 1883, she was 38.

In 1891 John is living alone at 33 York Street.  He is now a goods porter for the Great Eastern Railway.  John Henry is living with his grandparents in Arlesey, Bedfordshire.  It is uncertain what happens to Mary.  She can’t be located on the 1891 Census, neither can a death record be found.

John marries Eliza Dellar in 1893. She is the daughter of Lantaff Dellar from 87 York Street.

On the 1901 Census John and Eliza are still living at 33 York Street and they have a 7-month-old son named Ernest.  Eliza’s niece, Elizabeth Dellar, is living with the family.  She is 18 and a domestic servant who was born in Chelsea.

By 1911 John is widowed and living alone at 3 Cyprus Avenue.  He records that he had five children, two of whom have died.

Lucy and Jesse have been married for 18 years.  They have had six children, two of whom have died.
