Michael Bowyer in Air Raid! pub 1986 recounts stories from the bombing raid of 9th May 1941 when military vehicles in the streets off Hills and Mowbray Roads were targeted.
Bombs were burning brightly on Mowbray Road, on the pavement s and in the houses. From no 20 Mrs Rayner, her husband away in London’s Fire Service, was advised to leave with her young daughter. That meant a dash through the bombs burning, converting the street into a frightening spectacle.
