Hospital of St Mary, Longstowe

History of the Hospital of St Mary

Shortly before 1250, Walter, Vicar of Longstowe, founded an almshouse for a small religious community for women next to Ermine Street. the house never flourished and had probably died out by the end of the 14th century.

The site was marked by a small most just south of the Fox Inn Crossroads; the field to the south was known as ‘Nun’s Field’ in 1799.
