In Growing Up in Cambridge, Alec Forshaw decribes Mr Mallett. He was ‘an elderly red-faced gentleman with a fine grey walrus moustache, and his wife Ethel, neither of them ever seen outside without a hat…. we got quite used to the mayoral limousine, a black Bentley … arriving to pick him up in his red robes, tricorn hat and gold chain.’
