In Down Your Street, 1984, the barber’s shops is described: Mr Scott’s barber’s shop is the little cottage with the bow window and the distinctive pole at 169 East Road. he used to give shaves and haircuts “on tick” in anticipation of payment after the regular visit to the pawnbroker…. 169 East Road is the oldest established hairdresser’s in Cambridge. It began as a barber’s in 1826. (See Down Your Street, 1984, p.116)
