ML noted in 2024: “There was a photograph with Uncle Reuben wearing a brass helmet – I believe he was a volunteer fireman. He was a publican – kept a pub in King Street (Royal Arms) where I remember visiting with Auntie Hannah*. They’d let me go up to the Club Room where I was allowed to “bang about” on the piano. There was a picture on the wall above the piano – it was ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ – I would have been about 3 or 4 at the time** . He moved from King Street to Chesterton Road (Mitcham’s Corner – ‘The Jolly Waterman’. Stan and I held our wedding reception there in 1937.”
* Auntie Hannah – Reuben’s sister (a seamstress making shirts) would visit her brother in King St on her way home from delivering shirts to Bodger’s shop
** the age memory fits with date given on this page recording Reuben at The Royal Arms in 1904 – my mother was born in 1911.
