Jack T Bloxam

Jack  married to Dorothy Cable in 1947. He worked for 35 years in the Scientific Periodicals Library in Benet Street. When he started work there he was earning £4 10s a week. He retired in 1985.

He supplemented his income for some years by working as a bulldog. For two years from 1948 he acted as a ‘Reserve Bulldog’ if a regular bulldog was unavailable. He had to buy his uniform himslef. If any student were found to be incorrectly dressed the Bulldog would fetch the person to the Proctor who would note the name and expect them to report the following morning. The fine for failing to wear a gown was 6s 8d. jack was on duty when Winston Churchill received his honorary degree in 1948.
