Donald Monk was born at 27 Market Place 26th June 1939, son of Fred Monk and Winifred née Nash. The Nash family had been in the area for some years; Donald’s great grandfather had been the minister at Prickwillow Baptist Church.
Donald Monk’s reminiscences of Ely can be found in Ely Memories, 1998: I don’t remember much about the war – I think I can remember seeing Army vehicles (Brengun carriers) parking on Market Place and seeing military parades. My bedroom looked out over the market and so I had an ideal opportunity to see what was going on and certainly later on I remember the late Colonel Beckett drilling the Army Cadets and/or Territorial Army on the Market Square. … I stayed at Soham Grammar School until 18 after which I left and joined Pye Telecommunications at Newmarket Road, Cambridge where I became a radio engineer.
