History of 35-39 Waterside

Listed Building

An early C19 building comprising a main block (has 35 and 37) and an addition on the south end (No 39).

George Henry Hunt, basket maker, Ely

George Henry Hunt is making a potato basket on the floor of his workshop behind 39 Waterside Ely. He also made eel traps, fishing baskets, cycle and shopping baskets, hampers, armchairs, linen baskets and many for vegetables and fruit. His last apprentice, Bert Hunt, was visited by Richard Dimbleby in ‘Down Your Way’ and also featured in the film ‘Charted Waters’, made in 1944.
