Me 410 'Hornisse'

Lancaster Way Business Park, RAF Witchford

History of RAF Witchford

RAF Witchford played a prominent part in WWII. Construction started in 1942 and it was opened late in the war, June 1943.

A total of 99 bombers despatched  on operation from the aerodrome were lost, 8 being Stirlings and 91 Lancasters.

Ghostly aircraft noises have been reported from the site associated with the great losses of aircraft. (A Cambridgeshire Quiz Book, Jill Howard-Jones, pub 1997)

There was an attack by an Me 410 intruder the night of 18th-19th April 1944.

RAF Witchford a revisit to a fascinating airfield.

A very detailed account of the history of RAF Witchford can be found in ‘Memories of RAF Witchford’ by Barry and Sue Aldridge pub. 2013.
