Police House, Woodditton

History of the Police House

Law and order was represented by the village policeman, Constable Bertie Mann, succeeded during the early war years by Sergeant Squires. The village bobby occupied the police house at Maypole Corner and did his rounds on a large upright ‘police model’ cycle , with twin parallel crossbars. he knew everything worth knowing about the goings on in the community. We boys regarded him with a mixture of fear and respect as we usually had a guilty conscience.
