History of 18 Hills Road

Pevsner notes (Cambridgeshire p. 327): the retained facade of Cintra House, originally added c 1860-5 to an early C19 four-storey terrace. The design is reportedly by John Edlin, in a very coarse eclectic style, with a row of roundels and heads sticking out of them.

Thomas McKenny Hughes (1832-1917) was professor of geology at Cambridge University. He was a key figure in the establishment of the Sedgwick Museum.

Mary Caroline Weston was the daughter of Rev G F Weston of Crosby Ravensworth. They had three sons. Tom was killed in 1918 while carrying out aerial reconnaissance behind enemy lines; George was clerk to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and Alfred became an entomologist.

In 1911 the family were living at 21 Brooklands Avenue in the house called Ravensworth.
