Brownshill Staunch, Bluntisham
History of Brownshill Staunch
The tide flows up the New Bedford river as far as here. The staunch was constructed in the 1830s to raise the level of the river to allow boats to pass over the shoals. By 1948 the foundation of the Boat Inn had been broken up by constant flooding so it was demolished and replaced with a hut for the sluice-keeper.
