Holywell House (Manor), The Front, Holywell

History of Holywell House

Listed Building

Mid C19 house. L-plan, two-storeys with attics and cellars.

Holywell Manor before restoration

According to The Holywell Story by Joe Newell the Manor house dates from the 18th century. After WWI it was modernised by C J Churchton. There is a well sunk into the scullery floor drawing on the same strata as the nearby ‘Holy Well.’

1888 on July 15th a large Lombardy poplar in front of the house was brought down in a storm and 70 panes of glass shattered by lightening. In 1889 the house was hit again.

Mrs Sanders Spencer, wife of the famous pig breeder established an apiary in the grounds known as St Oswald Apiary. One year she produced 550lbs of honey.
