Garage near the Manor House

History of the Garage

Dora Tack writes in Whispering Elms that the garage was used by Mrs Butler who lived at the Manor House to keep her large car in, an Austin 6. She was the official war-time transport person for the village, who would drive people to appointments. In 1943 Dora Tack travelled in the car to Caxton Gibbet to catch the bus to Mill Road Maternity Hospital. The garage also housed the ‘Cricket Bus’, an old Dodge Van converted to a bus.

The garage burned down in 1945.
