High Street looking west from The Cross. C.1905.
53 – 57 High Street, St Neots
History of 53 - 57 High Street
The photo seems to show the street c.1905 as Ellwoods had moved by 1908. The barbers pole was Mr Flanders and the Ship Inn have long since gone, so there is nothing that remains of the architecture of the street east of the Congregational Church.
The building at this corner had been the George Inn in the 18th century with Assembly Rooms above. In 1910 the ground floor was freeman’s grocery store. This was taken over by the Co-op Society.
