Nursery School

In 1981 Sara Payne (CWN March) collected reminiscences of the school from the Rhodes family, who all went there. “It was run by the two Miss Brittains (Fatty and Thinny) he called them.”

There were three classes in what was an L-shaped building. The school was very strict and they remember that one day one of the teachers tied a boy to a chair and his mother cam to complain.

Gladys Barton, (75, in 1981), who lived at 5, Perse Almshouses, remembered Miss Brittain’s black velvet handbag full of the jelly sweets she liked. Gladys used to hunt after school for the dropped sweets.
