In 1884 Frederick Matthews was convicted of attempting to murder his wife and convicted to 15 years penal servitude.

ATTEMPTED WIFE MURDER.—At the Cambridge Borough Police Court last week, before the Mayor (H. Rance, Esq.), and other Magistrates, Frederick Matthews, Coronation-street, shoemaker, was charged with feloniously wounding his wife, with intent to murder her, on the 6th May last.—The Town Clerk (Mr. E. Foster) prosecuted; Mr. Poland Adcock appeared for the prisoner.—The facts of the case shortly are as follows:—On Sunday night, May 6th, about 11 o’clock, the attention of the police was called to the prisoner’s house. There the officer found Matthews near the front door with his throat cut, and after some enquiries, his wife was found at a friend’s with a large cut on the left side of her neck. Both were taken to the Hospital, and are still under medical treatment. The bedroom was covered with blood, and there was every indication of a struggle having taken place. The police found two razor cases (one empty) upon the prisoner’s person, whilst another razor, wet with blood, was found on the dressing-table.—After hearing the evidence of three constables, the case was adjourned until to-day, when, in all probability, Mrs. Matthews will give evidence. An application for bail was refused.
