Moretons Charity Almshouses, Little London Almshouses, 25 – 41 Rampton Road, Cottenham

History of Moretons Charity Almshouses

Listed Building:

Almshouses, dated 1853 on stone panel to front wall.

These are eight cottages built in Tudor style. There was an Anglican chapel in the centre opened 1855. The chapel is now two houses. The houses were modernised in 1961.

Walter J Adams is recorded as living here, at no.27, 2004-2007, and at no.31, 2012 – 2013.

Walter related his experiences of World War Two to Michael Bentinck and they were published in his book, War Time Memories, in 2001. He had met Michael at a talk Michael gave in the Village College in Cottenham. He was in combat at the outset of World War Two in the retreat to Dunkirk. He then served at the Regimental Training Centre. Unfortunately the published account does not identify his regiment.
