James Alan Calvert Brown (1922–1984), usually known as Alan Brown, had an unusual career in which wartime intelligence work directly shaped his later achievements as one of Cambridge’s pioneers of computer-based economic research.
After entering Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1940 as a classics scholar, Brown’s studies were interrupted in 1942 when he joined the British Army. Because of his exceptional linguistic ability, he was selected for an intensive six-month course in Japanese at the Bedford Japanese School. He was then commissioned into the Intelligence Corps and assigned to Japanese codebreaking work at Bletchley Park before serving in India and Burma, eventually reaching the rank of captain. His exposure to Hollerith punched-card machines and the earliest electronic computing techniques during this work proved transformative, giving him a lifelong interest in computational methods.
Returning to Cambridge in 1946, Brown abandoned classics and completed a degree in economics. He first worked on the National Food Survey, where he applied statistical methods to household consumption and nutrition. This experience brought him into contact with Richard Stone and led to his appointment in 1952 as Senior Research Officer in the Department of Applied Economics at Cambridge, where he spent the most productive years of his career.
At Cambridge, Brown became one of Britain’s earliest practitioners of computer-assisted economic modelling. At a time when electronic computers were still novel, he used them to tackle problems in linear programming, optimal diets, demand analysis and macroeconomic forecasting. His work helped establish econometrics as a practical discipline rather than a purely theoretical one. He was also a major contributor to the Cambridge Growth Project, which developed large-scale models of the British economy and later influenced economic planning in many other countries.
Brown’s research extended to the statistical analysis of household expenditure, Engel curves, probit methods and income distribution. His collaboration with statistician John Aitchison produced The Lognormal Distribution (1957), a work that remains a classic reference across economics and statistics. Equally important was his influence as a teacher and collaborator: colleagues frequently acknowledged that he generated ideas, solved difficult computational problems and encouraged interdisciplinary teamwork, even when he received little public credit himself.
Brown’s career illustrates the close connection between wartime innovation and post-war academic research. The computational methods developed for Japanese codebreaking during the Second World War became the foundation of his pioneering work in Cambridge, where he helped introduce computers into economic analysis and laid important foundations for modern econometrics.
