Thomas Newman convicted for breaking into house of Mr Harper, shoemaker, in Melbourn and stealing two pair of men’s and one of women’s shoes. Sentenced to death but commuted to 14 years transportation. (A Grim Almanac of Cambridgeshire, N R Storey)
