In 2019 and 2020 archaeological excavation were carried out in this area:

Two sites revealed evidence of village development in the 11th-15th centuries – notably ‘tofts’ and ‘crofts’ alongside earlier Roman and Bronze Age features. These different nuclei within the village are significant. The village prospered in Medieval times as witnessed by the size and ornamentation of its church. Ramsey Abbey seems to have influenced the settlement pattern around the church. By the 1560s it was one of the most populous villages in the area.
