“Old Pampisford” by O C Mayo contains reminiscences of the Rev Austin Lee. He was at Pampisford from 1935-1937; he lived in the loft over the stables of the vicarage to avoid paying the very high rates. The vicarage was then being used as a hostel for child refugees from the Basque region in Spain during the Spanish Civil war. Austin Lee resigned in 1937 for having received no payments during the time the vicarage was used as a hostel.
