Mabel Marguerite Lovesy Barnsdale, b. 1891, was the daughter of George H Barnsdale who, in 1911, was a sculptor and widower. She volunteered for the Red Cross from 1914-1915 and worked as a nurse at the auxiliary hospitals in Cintra Terrace and then Wordsworth Grove, Newnham.

Working man J.P. We have to record the death of a highly- esteemed townsman and a prominent figure in Friendly Society circles in the person of Mr G. H. Barnsdale, J.P., who passed away at his residence in Cherryhinton Road, Cambridge, on Wednesday morning last. For some time deceased had been suffering from an internal complaint (cancer) and the end came quite peacefully. A Hearts of Oak man, he took part in the founding of the Friendly Societies Institute at Cambridge and the Friendly Societies Council. He was born in 1851 and on May26, 1906, had the honour of being presented to the King at the opening of the new offices of the Hearts of Oak Society in Euston Road, London. In November, 1915, he was appointed a J.P. for the Borough of Cambridge, which appointment he faithfully filled up to the time of his death. He was the first, working man to be made a J.P. for the Borough.
