1898 – 1956

Cornelius Henry Franklin King was born in Bury St Edmunds in 1870, but was living on Gwydir Street with his parents in 1871.  After the 1871 Census there does not appear to be any record where he uses “Cornelius” (his father’s name) and goes by “Henry” or “Frank” instead.

He married Annie Harriet Juby in 1890.  The Electoral Registers record him as living at 89 York Street by 1898.  On the 1901 Census Henry and Annie have three children. Mabel Mary is 8, Alice Victoria is 3 and Percy Cronje is 1.  Henry is employed as a wood turner.

By 1911 he records himself as “Frank” and he is now 41 and a carpenter working for the Great Eastern Railway.  Mabel (now 18) is a domestic servant.  Alice and Percy are at school and there are two more children, Winifed Christian (8) and Harold William (5).  The census records that the couple have been married for twenty years and have had six children, one of whom has died.

On the 18th May 1913 Henry joins the National Union of Railwaymen.

Mabel married Herbert Wilson in 1915.  They had one daughter, Mabel Victoria King, who was born in 1916.  Herbert was killed at the Somme on the 4th of August 1916.  He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France and on two family graves for the Kings in Mill Road Cemetery.  With Henry in the St Andrew the Less parish and with Annie and her children in the Holy Trinity Parish.

Mabel and her daughter lived at 83 York Street.  The 1939 register records that Mabel worked as college servant in the buttery and her daughter worked as a food checker in a preserves factory. They lived at number 83 until Mabel’s death in 1952.

Henry died in 1917 and is buried in Mill Road Cemetery.

Percy died in 1922 aged 22.

Winifred married George Harvey in 1929.

Harold married Phyllis Livermore 1932.

The 1939 Register shows that Annie and daughter Alice are still living at 89 York Street. Alice is recorded as “incapacitated”.  Annie died in 1941 and Alice continued to live at number 89.  Electoral registers record her there until 1956.

Annie, Alice, Percy and Mabel are buried in Mill Road Cemetery.
