Albert Institute Gymnasium Squad, Grafton Street, 1905 (MoC59.93)

11 & 12 Grafton Street, Jubilee Hall, Albert Institute and Youths’ Club

History of Jubilee Hall

The caption ‘Victorian and Edwardian Cambridge from Old Photographs’ (1976) state that the Albert Institute was originally called the Cambridge Youth’s Club The Institute was erected in Paradise Street in 1867. Classes were held in many subjects for boys aged 14 to 20. Charles Kingsley and Oscar Browning were among the lecturer. The club had outstanding sports teams.

However it is also claimed that the Albert Institute was set up in Green Street in 1866 by Ernest Boys.
