History of 29 Perne Road

Douglas Ronald Charles Mace b. 1919 in Chesterton, was the son of William Edward and Minnie Mace. He has married Joan Dorothy in Rhodesia.

He became a warrant officer pilot in the 66th Squadron RAF Volunteer Reserve. He died at Perranporth in a collision with another aircraft on 23/10/1943 and is buried at St Andrew’s Cherry Hinton.

66 Squadron operated as a fighter squadron using Spitfires. Its operational base varied; from 17th September to 8th November it was based at Perranporth in Cornwall carrying out sweeps over France and coastal sectors.

The crash log of RAF Davidstow Moor records that on 23rd October 1943 two Supermarine Spitfire V aircraft, AD260 and EP639 of 66 Squadron based at Perranporth collided while beating-up the airfield after a successful search operation over the Ile de Batz for survivors of a British vessel. W/O D R C Mace and F/Lt D T Baker were killed.
