This one of 18 schools in the county to have been endowed between 1660 and 1730. The cost was borne by various charities and children paid: 6d children of farmers, 3d those of tradesmen and all others 1d a week. In 1837 the schoolmaster was paid £20 a year to teach 80 pupils, two thirds of which were girls.
The old school building is one of the village community centres.
