Whittlesey Mill and Chimney

History of Whittlesey Mill

Historic OS map Whittlesey

Mike Petty notes in Vanishing Cambridgeshire: Whittlesey had 13 windmills in operation in the late 1800s. Until 1870 nearly all the inhabitants fed on their own home-grown grain. G H Fletcher wrote on 9th December 1929: My mill is the only one left in the parish. It was rebuilt about 70 years ago… Unfortunately yesterday the fan was struck off by a violent thunderstorm. He wrote again in 1931: The mill struck by lightning was repaired and working again by the middle of January 1930, the cost was about £75.
