Barnwell at War (2018) tells the story of Arthur Harvey, who in peacetime worked for the Great Eastern Railway. Called up as a reservist, 34 year old Arthur had been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for single-handedly collecting 16 wounded men on the Menin Road near Ypres, and getting them into an ambulance wagon while under constant fire.
Married to Eliza and with two children at 23 York Street, he was acting company quartermaster-sergeant of the 2nd West Riding Regiment. He apologised to Alfred Mansfield, leader of the New Street Men’s Bible Class, for not attending the bible class the previous Sunday.
