Anne (Anna) Cluzeau(x)
By 1893, Anna had established the Madame Charles Cluzeaux laundry at Biarritz Cottage, 44 Islip Road, Sunnymead, in north Oxford. Sunnymead became famous for its laundries and was popularly known as ‘Soapsud Island’. The area provided laundry services for dons from Oxford University. It seemed that the Cluzeau family were much-travelled, living, for example, in London (1889), Wigan (1891) and South Stoneham (1901). I refer to Sunnymead and its laundries in my forthcoming book: ‘The Butcher, The Tailor, The Picture-Frame Maker…Stories of Middle Way’ (The Book Guild, Feb. 2023). [Email from Gareth Winnow, 2022]
