1895 CIP 27.12.1895: BREWER RECOMMENDATION OF TOTAL ABSTINENCE: Benjamin Gage (29), bricklayer, 10, Stone-street was charged with damaging a door at the house of James Smith, 54, Gwydir-street, and doing damage to the extent of 7s, on December 26th. He was further charged with being drunk and disorderly in Gwydir street, and also with assaulting P.c. Holmes whilst in the execution of his duty at the same time and place. James Smith, the prosecutor, said he saw the defendant in his house about 2.30 p.m. He was drunk and started knocking his wife about. Witness stopped him, and the defendant then struck him. He put the defendant out of the house. Witness accompanied the defendant’s wife to the Police Station to ask advice. When he returned he found the door damaged to the amount of 7s. Henry William North, a carpenter, of 33, Gwydir street, said on December 26th he was on the door step of his house, and saw the defendant at the prosecutor’s house. He kicked the door and broke it open. P.c. Holmes said he was called to Gwydir-street about 6.40 p.m., and saw the defendant outside 54, Gwydir-street. He was drunk and was shouting. He had a crowd round him. Witness arrested him, but had not gone more than three yards when he threw himself down and commenced kicking, and kicked witness on the left hand. Witness went to the police surgeon get his hand dressed. Defendant denied doing the damage wilfully ; he did it in a fit of temper. Defendant was fined 5s. and 7s. damages. Mr Gilbert, a brewer, of Ainsworth-street, advanced the money on condition of his remaining a teetotaler.
