2 Barton Road (site of Newnham Villa)

History of 2 Barton Road

1880s – 1930s: Newnham Villa

In 1887 George Barnes lived here and Mrs S E Barnes was still living here in 1925

1952

House built by Mark and Lettice Appleby. During the excavation of the site a doorstep was unearthed which it was speculated could have belonged to Newnham Villa.

The Applebys needed a licence to build their house after the war; they bought the freehold from the publican of the Red Bull across the road. The architect was called Myers; he had designed several houses in the vicinity of the Perse School.
