Ben Hayward built 95 Barton Road and the family moved there from premises over the shop in Trumpington Street.
His daughter, Kathleen Hayward, who lived in 1982 in a flat on the other side of the road, also built by her father, told the CWN (2.12.1982) in that year:
It was open country there then – no Gough Way, just open land belonging to Corpus Christi.
Four years after he had built no.95 Ben Hayward sold the house and bought a plot of land in Millington Road. “We built a house there – no 34 – but mother didn’t get out a lot, it was very quiet, so when this piece of ground came up for sale, we moved up here and built no.100 just beyond and opposite no.95.”
In 1956, the year he died, Ben Hayward built no.102 for his daughter.
