History of 1 Sherlock Road
1938 04 08
Miss D.I. Macdonald of Sherlock Road has returned from Spain, where she experienced air raids. “There is nothing you can do except sit still, and I was frightened because I felt completely trapped.” Universities were deliberately selected as targets by attackers who feared the people within them. Government proposals to construct covered trenches in domestic gardens here were sensible: the essential requirement was protection from splinters and machine-gun bullets. In Spain the shelters were not unsightly, as flower beds had been planted on top of them. 38 04 08
