History of the Oriental Plane
In the middle of the Fellows’ garden is the Oriental Plane tree raised by Edward Daniel Clarke in 1802 from seed brought by him from Thermopylae.
Clarke, the first Professor of Mineralogy, was known as ‘Stone’ Clarke, to distinguish him from ‘Bone’ Clark, the Professor of Anatomy, and ‘Tone’ Clarke, otherwise John Clarke Whitfield, Professor of Music. (A B Gray, Cambridge Revisited)
