28 June 1912 – Death of master chimney sweep William Thomas Kirkup
The death of William Thomas Kirkup marked the passing of one of Cambridge’s best-known tradesmen. Regarded as a pioneer of the modern scientific system of chimney sweeping, Kirkup’s business served many of the University’s colleges, particularly Trinity and St John’s. He had formerly lived in King Street before moving to Bottisham and later returning to Cambridge, where he died at his Chesterton Road home aged sixty-seven. Away from his business he devoted twenty-two years to the Volunteer Force as a bandsman, illustrating the civic contribution made by many skilled tradesmen of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
