History of George and Golden Lion Inns

The George was probably on of the oldest inns in Wisbech. Renovations in 1936 revealed a lot of old woodwork. There was a massive carved oak beam used as a mantelpiece, probably from a medieval ship.

1845 coaches ran from here to the Crown Inn Peterborough through Eye, Thorney and Guyhirn. Fare 3s.

Golden Lion:

Once known as ‘Rifleman’ or ‘British Rifleman’. The three inns, Golden Lion, George and Mermaid, all joined on to eachother.
