Cottages Grove End, Hilton

History of the cottages, Grove End

According to Dora Tack, in the first cottage on the left lived Susie Roslyn’s father, Tom Smith, her mother Rose and brothers ‘Son’ and Douglas. On Mondays Susie and her mother did their washing together. The huge mangle stood in Susie’s garden. Susie and her mother stood over steaming tubs and the copper bubbled away in the shed. After being boiled and mangled the clothes were put on the washing line.

Susie also reared chickens and geese. Goslings would follow her around after they hatched.

On the right hand side lived Stanley Childs.
