Cambridge housewives faced soaring prices as thousands of tons of imported food remained stranded during the national dock strike. At Clements, the Mill Road greengrocers, the price of imported Granny Smith apples rose from 11p to 14p per pound, while bananas increased from 8p to 11p per pound. Tomatoes had also risen sharply. Other retailers reported shortages of imported fruit as the strike entered its second week.
