Bridges over River Cam / Granta, Church Street, Great Shelford

History of bridge, Great Shelford

Listed building:

Bridge, C18 and early C19. Dressed limestone and gault brick. Span of three segmental arches of dressed limestone with two cutwaters rebuilt in early C19 brick. Parapet of cast iron piers and railings on low, brick wall.

Fanny Wale wrote c.1908: the wall between the bridges bounds the Manor House property, belonging in 1903 to Miss Mary Walton – on the wall between the two parishes there is a black line to mark the boundary of the two parishes. The triangular meadow is in both parishes. …. the ford must have been here – and there was a long wooden foot bridge – under which, tradition says a hermit used to live.
