Grange Farm

History of Grange Farm

In 1849 Josiah Chater recorded in his diary a burglary at Grange Farm:

On Saturday night a party of robbers broke into Mr Toft’s house at Grange Farm, went into a room where slept two ladies, and took two gold watches and £7. 10s. Tofts hearing them jumped out of his window and ran off to the police station without anything more on than his shirt and drawers. When he arrived there he was locked up for three hours as he was considered mad. Well might they think so, to leave his sister and another female to the mercy of three robbers and run all that way, nearly two miles; most absurd, seeing he had on his premises two other men, besides dogs.
