15.6.1931: at the end of school is was reported that ‘Monsters’ was on fire. This was a small shop on the Village Green that sold penny fruit drinks called ‘Penny Monsters’.
The Cottenham fire engine couldn’t be got out because grass had grown in front of its shed. The fire engine from cambridge was called and put the fire out with water from Gautrey’s pond on the Village College site.
The equipment for the hydrants was stored at David Ingles’ workshop almost opposite the Jolly Millers public house. (See Cottenham in Focus, 2002)
