It seems likely that this was the site, or right next to, the old St Peter’s workhouse. In the 1770s the workhouse could house up to 8 inmates. It was closed in 1836. A local resident recounted that the inmates taken away included “blind Old Dick” and a curious married couple. See https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Cambridge/
Later photos seem to show a vacant plot at this location.
