Josiah Chater was very involved in the setting up of a Cambridge branch of the YMCA. On 16th September 1852 he wrote in his diary:
Had a committee meeting of our Association and fixed on having Finch’s rooms for 12 months. Have gathered about £80 in donations. Appointed a committee to buy tables etc.
In 1853 the YMCA moved to 5 Sidney Street.
