1908 CIP 30.10.1908: CONFLICT WITH THE POLICE AT CAMBRIDGE. BROTHERS BEFORE THE BENCH. At the Cambridge Borough Police Court on Monday, before the Mayor (H. G. Whibley, Esq.), the ex-Mayor (G. Stace, Esq.), Dr J. H. C. Dalton, A. S. Campkin, J. Taylor, E. C. Young, and P. H. Young, Esqs. Milton John Rockett, aged 22, painter, of 4, Suncourt, Newmarket-road, was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and with assaulting Kate Beales in Gwydir-street, and also with assaulting P.c. Ward while in the execution of his duty, on East-road, on Saturday night.
P.c. Ward stated that about ten minutes past eleven on Saturday night the accused was in Gwydir street very drunk, throwing himself about, and wanting to fight Mr. Beales, a relative of his. Witness requested him to go away several times, but, as he refused, he was taken into custody. In East-road, on the way to the station, be struck witness in the mouth, and witness had to obtain the assistance of a Mr. Reynolds, who was passing, to get him to the station.
Arthur John Reynolds, postman, of 4, Edward-street, gave evidence of seeing the constable struggling with the accused and going to his assistance, and the Chief Constable tendered thanks to the witness for helping the constable when in difficulties.
In regard to the charge of assaulting Mrs Beales, the complainant, who is the wife of Alfred Beales, a carman, living at Gwydir street, said that the accused went to her house after eleven o’clock on Saturday night, and said he wanted to talk her about his sister. She asked him to go out of the house on three occasions, telling him she had had enough of him once more, and he then struck her on the right side of the face with his fist.
Herbert Green, shop assistant, of 56, Ross street, said he saw the accused strike Mrs. Beales as he was passing the house.
Accused expressed his sorrow for what had happened, adding that it was due to his being in drink.
It was stated that he had been before the Bench on a previous occasion, and the Magistrates fined him 5s. for being drunk and disorderly, 10s. in each of the assault cases, together with the costs in one case, 7s.—the total penalty amounting to 32s.
There were also charges against Alfred Rockett, aged 25, painter, of 164, Newmarket road, for assaulting P.c. Wright, and obstructing P.c. Ward, while in the execution of their duty on Saturday night. P.c. Ward stated that while he was proceeding along Norfolk-street with Milton Rockett in custody the accused tried to get his brother away, and persisted in his conduct in spite of warnings, with the result that he was taken into custody by P.c. Wright.
Accused alleged that he only took hold of the constable’s shoulders, and asked him to let his brother home, but Ward’s evidence was borne out P.c. Wright, who added that after being taken into custody the accused made an attempt to get away, and also tried to throw him. Witness thereupon closed with him, and accused struck him on the lip and also knocked his helmet They wrestled together on the ground, and witness had to get him down, and, with the assistance of P.s. Free, handcuff him, before taking him to the station. When he was searched a bottle nearly full of stout was found on him. Witness denied the suggestion of the accused that it was a man in the crowd who hit him.
Evidence was also given by P.s. Free, and accused, who said that the affair was all through his brother, was fined 10s. inclusive.
