Doris M Jenkins née Taylor
They married in Cambridge in 1945. Doris had brown up at 72 Young Street. On marriage she moved to Whitehill Road. She reminisced to ‘Memories of Abbey and East Barnwell p42f.’
When I lived in Whitehill Road my son was three months old and my second son was born in 1955, so my children and our families took up a lot of our time. There were lots of clubs and things to do, but when my children were young we only went to school events. The Summer Fete and Christmas Fair. The boys went to Sunday school and one of them was a very keen scout and we went to events at Stanesfield Road Scout Hut. When we came to Whitehill Road very few people had a car. we had a van in 1955 as my husband worked as a self-employed decorator. There is a lot of traffic and the road is used a lot more now.
During the time I lived in Whitehill Road from 1963 I did insurance part time and in the summer for about five years. I worked for Kelly’s Directories for a few weeks each year.
