History of 4 Mill Lane
1901 vacant
In 1950 photographer Ellis Minn described Mill Lane: But the jewel of the Lane is being taken from us. No.4 on the South side was the printing house owned by Mr Hall the bookseller who also calls himself a publisher. It was about 16 feet across and half the height of its neighbour, but very sensibly designed with the great window extending absolutely the whole width of the building to give light to the compositors.T he University wanted the site to display the elegancies of the Stuart House and to make better access to the Lecture Rooms. But Mr Hall sturdily replied that he would be damned if he would walk an extra step to go and look after his printing. After his business came to an end the little shop was occupied by the English Instrument Company. (E H Minns – The Cambridge review, 4.11.1950)
