Desmond in 2019 recalled moving from Suffolk with his parents to Hills Road in 1933 when he was 7. His father Edward had taken on the job of deputy manager of the Green King brewery in Panton Street. He was given the responsibility for the issue of petrol coupons in Cambridge. Desmond recalls the screaming sound of bombs in air raids and the frequent visits to the family air raid shelter. In one raid incendiary bombs fell along Hills Road; one landed in the porch of 157 and the family had to use a sandbag to make the bomb safe.
