Broken Tech Broken Earth

Abdullah Safir is a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge and a Research Scientist Intern at Microsoft, specialising in AI ethics, design and the perspectives of the Majority World. As a Gates Cambridge Scholar, he investigates how artificial intelligence can be developed in ways that are more inclusive and responsive to diverse communities.

His work builds on research across Cambridge’s Centre for the Future of Intelligence, Computer Laboratory and international collaborations focused on responsible technology. Before joining Cambridge, Abdullah contributed to digital strategy research in Bangladesh, exploring how technology can better serve society. Abdullah is motivated by his belief that, “AI should be designed with the experiences of all communities in mind, especially those whose voices have historically been overlooked.”

Abdullah hopes to stay in Cambridge after finishing his studies and is excited to network and meet more of the Cambridge tech community.

This story was shared by a volunteer as part of the Broken Tech, Broken Earth project which aims to co-create events with the local community about the social, historical and environmental impacts of technology. This project is externally funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund as part of the Museum Association. The project is led by the Centre for Computing History, which is a registered educational charity and independent museum located in Cambridge. Our mission is to use our collections, displays, learning programmes, and events to engage the public with the developments in computing over the past 80 years.
